Area: Kitesurfing on the North East Coast of England.
The Gare is a lagoon, situated at the North end of Majuba beach, Redcar. It’s sheltered by a reef, which protects it from the waves especially at lower tide states, making it a great flat water shredding venue.
Wind Directions
The Gare will work on anything from N clockwise around to S. Easterly is on-shore. If the wind swings round to a westerly direction, your best bet is Paddy's Hole, just down the road.
Tide States
The Gare can be ridden at all tide states. Low tide states produce flat water conditions, at high tide this turns choppy.
Riding Types
The flat water at the Gare makes it perfect for freestyle/wakestyle riding.
Local Information
As with Paddy’s Hole, for just one day per year, the access road has to be closed to maintain its ‘private road’ status. If you’re traveling specially, you might want to check ahead on the forums.
Facilities
Very little really. There’s free parking at the side of the road and that’s just about your lot. However, you’re right next to Redcar town so not far for an after-shred pint.
Hazards
- Mussel beds just below the water at lower tide states
- The reef
Getting There & Parking
Drive to Redcar and follow signs to Warrenby. At the end of the road take the steel works lane right the way to the mouth of the river Tees, continue until you reach the end of the road. The Gare will be on your right (about 500m past Paddy’s Hole, which will be on your left).
Weather Forecast & Live Readings
I’m hoping at some point to get a decent feed into the site for weather, but until then here’s a link to 7 day wind forecast for Redcar.
And if you’re wondering if it’s on right now, I think this is the best resource: Latest hour by hour wind readings, Hartlepool.
